SR-22 Insurance Glossary

SR-22 insurance is a state filing that proves you carry the coverage your state requires — not a separate policy. The terms below are the ones high-risk drivers meet most often on the way to an SR-22 filing, from minimum liability limits to license reinstatement. Each SR-22 insurance definition is written in plain language.

SR-22
A standardized certificate showing that a named person has a motor vehicle liability policy meeting the financial-responsibility requirements of the receiving jurisdiction. It is evidence filed in connection with a policy, not a standalone insurance policy.
Liability Auto Coverage
Insurance that responds to covered legal liability for injuries or property damage caused to others through motor vehicle use, subject to policy terms and limits.
DUI
A conviction or administrative offense involving impaired motor vehicle operation; depending on jurisdiction it may trigger an SR-22, an FR-44, or other reinstatement conditions.
DWI
Legal term for DUI used primarily in Texas, Missouri, and New Jersey; treated much like a DUI, though the exact filing a conviction triggers depends on the jurisdiction.
Reckless Driving
A serious traffic offense involving operation with the level of disregard defined by the jurisdiction; it may lead to suspension or a future-proof requirement depending on state law and the case.
Driving Without Insurance
Operation of a motor vehicle without the liability insurance or other financial responsibility required by the jurisdiction.
License Suspension
A temporary withdrawal of driving privileges by a court or agency, often lasting until a time period and specified reinstatement conditions are satisfied.
Ignition Interlock Device
A breathalyzer device installed on a vehicle that prevents engine start if the driver's breath alcohol level exceeds a threshold. Courts or state agencies may order one after certain impaired-driving offenses.
Financial Responsibility Law
A jurisdiction's statutes and regulations defining required liability protection, qualifying proof, triggers, sanctions, filing periods, and termination rules.
Minimum Liability Limits
The lowest liability limit a jurisdiction accepts for ordinary motor vehicle financial responsibility; some special forms or offenses require higher limits.
Certificate of Financial Responsibility
The general category of state-required documentation proving a driver maintains minimum auto liability coverage; SR-22 is the most common form but state-specific variants (FR-44, DL-123, MN form) exist.
